Yanam is an enclave of the Puducherry Union Territory located on the banks of the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh. It offers a unique blend of French colonial heritage and serene natural landscapes. The region is covered with coconut trees and one can enjoy fresh iodine-rich air since it is located on the banks of the Gauthami Godavari River. The river Gauthami Godavari is one of the main branches of the river Godavari and enters the Bay of Bengal after flowing about 12 km through Yanam.
Yanam serves as a unique cultural, religious, and administrative bridge, featuring the 15th-century Venkanna Babu Temple and distinctive French-influenced heritage, including an old French church and the Yanam Bridge. This region was ruled by the French for 300 years, and every year in March a major festival is celebrated here, attracting devotees from various neighbouring places including Christians, Muslims and Hindus.
The “Venkanna Babu Temple” was built by the kings of Rajamahendravaram (now Rajahmundry) in the 15th century. The temple’s deity idol has a big moustache, similar to Lord Sathyanarayana Swamy of Annavaram. During the pre-independence era, Yanam was famous for child marriages since the region was under French rule and not bound by British law. Thanks to the efforts of social reformer Raja Rama Mohan Roy, the Sarada Act (prevention of child marriages) was eventually implemented.
The Grand Mosque in Yanam was established on a site donated by the French Government in 1848, remodelled in 1956, rebuilt in 1978, and extended in 1999–2000. The New Bridge – Balayogi Varadhi – was inaugurated by Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, CM of Andhra Pradesh, in 2002.
