BREIF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM:

Nanda Devi East Base Camp Trek from Munsiyari is a captivating high-altitude adventure that takes you deep into the heart of the Kumaon Himalayas, offering an intimate view of India’s second-highest peak—Nanda Devi (7,816 m)—and its eastern twin. This trek is ideal for seasoned trekkers seeking solitude, spiritual connection, and a glimpse into the ancient Himalayan way of life

 

Starting from the scenic hamlet of Munsiyari, known for its cascading waterfalls and the heritage of the Johari tribe, the trek follows an ancient Indo-Tibetan trade route. Over 10 days, trekkers traverse through alpine meadows, dense forests, glacial valleys, and remote villages like Laspa, Burfu, Ghanghar, and Rilkote, each echoing stories of Himalayan resilience and cultural richness.

 

The trail culminates at the Nanda Devi East Base Camp (approx. 3,800–4,200 m), nestled beside the Pachu Glacier, where trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of towering peaks like Trishuli, Hardeol, and Rishi Pahar.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

This expedition is open to YHAI members who are 15 years above and physically fit. Above 60 years will be allowed after approval of Programme Co-ordinator/Authorised Persons in offline mode.

 

Required Documents:

  1. Admit Card
  2. Medical Certificate (original copy): A Trekking Medical Certificate is mandatory at the time of reporting. It should be signed by a registered Medical Practitioner and include their registration number and stamp.
  3. YHAI Membership Card
  4. Photo ID Proof (Original and photocopy)
  5. Two passport size photographs

 
HOW TO REACH THE BASE CAMP:

By Train: Kathgodam railway Station is the nearest railway station, Kathgodam is well connected by railway network with major destinations of India.

 

By Bus: Kathgodam is well connected by motorable roads with major destinations of Northern India and Uttarakhand State. From ISBT Kashmere Gate, Delhi you can get bus from Delhi to Haldwani on regular basis. From Haldwani you can take rickshaw to reach Kathgodam Railway Station (Pickup point).

 

By Air: People who prefer to travel by air can easily do so as the closest airport lies at a distance of 71 km from Kathgodam. The Pantnagar airport is connected with other cities with the help of regular and frequent flights. However internationals travelers can travel till the Indira Gandhi International airport in Delhi, which is the closest airport and can further take a flight to the Pantnagar airport. With the help of a bus or a cab from the airport, travelers can easily reach Kathgodam.

Accommodation in Hotel/Tent on sharing basis will be provided.

Simple, nutritious vegetarian meals will be provided.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BRING ALONG:

Essential Clothing and Gear:

  • Trekking Shoes: Ensure your shoes have a good grip, fit well, and are broken in. Please don’t use new trekking shoes during the trek. Ankle support is recommended.
  • Rucksack: 50 – 60 ltr Rucksack. We will not provide rucksack in this trek.
  • Bag Cover: Keep your backpack dry.
  • Plastic Covers: Protect electronic items and wet clothes.
  • Day Pack: Carry a small day pack (10L or 20L); it may require on acclimatization day or visit to market or anywhere. In your daypack, you can keep water bottles, lunch snacks, rainwear, emergency medicines, a torch/headlamp, and a warm layer.

Clothing:

  • Trousers (preferably Dry fit): Two or Three comfortable pants for trekking.
  • T-shirts/Shirts (Preferably Dry Fit): Two – three T-shirts/Shirts
  • Fleece/Sweater and Jacket: Layer up to stay warm during chilly evenings. The temperature will be around 0-5 degrees in the evening and morning, so carry woolen accordingly.
  • Woolen Cap: Keep your head warm at higher altitudes.
  • Light Towel: Compact and quick-drying.
  • Sun Cap: Shield yourself from the sun’s rays.
  • Socks (3 -4 pairs): Moisture-wicking and comfortable.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from glare and UV radiation.
  • Headlamp/Torch: Essential for night use.
  • Trekking Pole: Provides stability and support.
  • Rainwear (Raincoat or Poncho): Be prepared for unexpected showers.
  • Toilet Kit: Personal hygiene essentials.
  • Lunch Box: Carry your meals during the trek.
  • Sleeper/Hiking Sandal: Comfortable footwear for campsite use.
  • Water Bottle: Stay hydrated.
  • Personal Medical Kit: Include basic medications and first aid supplies.

 
Day Wise Schedule

  • Day 01: Kathgodam to Patal Bhuwaneshwar via Jageshwar Dham
  • Begin your journey in Kathgodam and drive through the lush Kumaon hills to Jageshwar Dham, a revered temple complex nestled among deodar forests. Known for its intricate stone architecture and spiritual ambiance, Jageshwar offers a tranquil pause before continuing toward Patal Bhuwaneshwar—a mystical limestone cave temple believed to be connected to ancient legends and cosmological symbolism. Overnight stay near Patal Bhuwaneshwar/Chowkori.

  • Day 02: Patal Bhuwaneshwar to Munsiyari
  • After exploring the enchanting subterranean chambers of Patal Bhuwaneshwar, continue your scenic drive through undulating valleys and forested ridgelines to Munsiyari. Often called the “Gateway to Johar Valley,” Munsiyari sits beneath the majestic Panchachuli peaks and was once part of an ancient Indo-Tibetan trade route. The area offers glimpses into the rich cultural heritage of the Bhotia community. Overnight stay in Munsiyari.

  • Day 03: Munsiyari to Laspa (2,200 m – 3,200 m)
  • Kick off your trek with an early morning drive through remote villages like Lilam, Bogudiyar, Rargari, and Mapang. Each hamlet whispers stories of historic trade caravans and alpine survival. Reach Laspa by afternoon—your first trailhead into the sacred Johar Valley. Set camp near the village and take an acclimatization walk, enriched with warm interactions with the locals whose traditions blend Tibetan roots and Kumaoni spirit.

  • Day 04: Explore Bankatiya Glacier Base (4,000 m)
  • A full-day trek takes you toward the awe-inspiring Bankatiya Glacier Base, with views of the towering Bankatiya Peak (6,800 m). This high-altitude route is both scenic and essential, traversing through wildflower meadows and rocky moraines. Return to Laspa in the evening for camp stay, the atmosphere charged with anticipation for the days ahead.

  • Day 05: Laspa to Burfu (3,200 m – 3,150 m)
  • Embark on a 5–6 hour trek along the roaring Gori Ganga River, passing through highland pastures dotted with shepherd huts. The trail opens to panoramic views of legendary peaks like Trishuli and Hardeol. Burfu village welcomes you with its stone masonry Johari houses, sacred shrines, and tales of traders who once journeyed to Tibet via hidden Himalayan passes. Overnight camping near Burfu allows for a deeper connection to the land and its stories.

  • Day 06: Burfu to Ghanghar (3,150 m – 3,300 m)
  • Continue through mixed forests and alpine terrain on a moderate 4-hour trek. Cross the lively Lwan Gad stream and ascend to Ghanghar, the last inhabited settlement en route to the base camp. This village, steeped in folklore and surrounded by ancient cedar groves, serves as a testament to high-altitude resilience and harmony with nature. Camp overnight here, under a sky dusted with stars.

  • Day 07: Ghanghar to Nanda Devi East Base Camp (3,300 m – 3,800 m)
  • Journey upward through lush meadows and glacial debris to reach the iconic Nanda Devi East Base Camp—nestled beneath the commanding twin peaks of Nanda Devi and Nanda Devi East. This sacred mountain, once closed to climbers due to its ecological fragility and spiritual significance, remains a symbol of reverence among locals and trekkers alike. Spend the day absorbing the grandeur of the Himalayas, with ample time for exploration and photography.

  • Day 08: Base Camp to Rilkote (4,200 m – 3,100 m)
  • Begin your descent through alpine grasslands and whispering pines, retracing your steps past Ghanghar before arriving at Rilkote. Once a seasonal stopover for traders and shepherds navigating their way to Tibet, Rilkote exudes a timeless solitude. Set up camp in this historic pastoral site for an evening of peace and reflection.

  • Day 09: Rilkote to Laspa, Drive to Munsiyari (3,100 m – 2,200 m)
  • Enjoy a short morning trek back to Laspa before transitioning to a 4-hour drive to Munsiyari. Upon arrival, settle into your guesthouse and let your weary feet rest. The evening is yours to explore the vibrant local market, interact with residents, or simply watch the sunset paint golden hues across the Panchachuli peaks.

  • Day 10: Departure from Munsiyari
  • With your soul rejuvenated and heart full of memories, depart Munsiyari after breakfast. The echoes of ancient villages, icy ridges, and starlit campsites will stay with you long after you leave this mystical land.

SAFETY & SECURITY:

Trained/expert camp leaders will be available for guidance. Medicines will be available in the camp. First aid/ basic medical assistance shall be provided. While every care has been taken to ensure safety, The Youth Hostels Association of India, Delhi State Branch will not be responsible for any accidents, illness and any such unforeseen eventualities.

 
Special Casual leave:

The Trekking Expedition organized by Youth Hostels Association of India have the approval of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (Dept. of Personnel and Training), Government of India, vide Office Order no. 28016/3/89-Estt (A), Dated 25 October, 1989. Participants working in the Central Govt. Organization can apply to the authorities concerned for availing special casual leave for the duration of the expedition. This leave can be sanctioned by their office up to 30 days in calendar year.

 
Certificates:

Participants, who successfully complete the trek and abide by the discipline of the program, will be awarded certificates.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  1. Smoking, use of alcohol and narcotics of any description is strictly prohibited during the course of the program.
  2. Deviation from the set route of the program is not permitted. If participants may wish to join any other activity, they may do so at their own responsibility and risk only after finishing the program and checking out.
  3. Stay other than YHAI Camp is not allowed for the entire duration of the camp.
  4. This is an environment friendly trek. Do no litter any wrappers or spoil the trial in any way. In case you find any wrapper, plastic bag or anything left by trekkers on the way, please carry the same with you and deposit at the next camp.
  5. Burning of woods during camp fire is strictly prohibited.
  6. Medical Certificate is compulsory; you have to summit Medical Certificate at the time of reporting.
  7. If found flouting the rules, your participation will be terminated with immediate effect.

Cancellation Policy

CANCELLATION RULES:

In case you are unable to join this trek you will get 50% of the Programme Fee which is Rs. 12250 /- as refund, provided your online cancellation request is received before 15 September 2025 (positively). Any request received after the last date of cancellation will not be considered.

 

Any unforeseen event / strike or natural calamity will not be considered as a cause of cancellation. Refund will be given after completion of the programs.
