Itinerary

The Panderiya Nature Education Centre of the Shetrunji Wildlife Division sits beside the Shetrunji dam near Palitana in Bhavnagar district, about 215 km from Ahmedabad. The Shetrunji river rises in the Gir hills near Dhari and flows past the Shatrunjaya hills on its way to the Gulf of Khambhat; the dam built across it in 1959 forms a wide reservoir ringed by hills. The area is considered part of the lion corridor: forest officials describe the Shetrunji river as a natural route for Asiatic lions moving out of the Gir landscape, and lions are now regularly sighted around the Shatrunjaya hills. Nearby, the Shatrunjaya hills rise to about 580 metres and hold the Palitana temples, more than 860 Jain temples reached by around 3,750 stone steps, while Hastagiri, a hilltop Jain tirth overlooking the river, is the main trek of this camp. Hills, water and wildlife together make Panderiya a rewarding setting for nature education and trekking.
