Itinerary

Palitana lies in Bhavnagar district of Saurashtra, about 215 km from Ahmedabad and 56 km from Bhavnagar, at the foot of the Shatrunjaya hills. The hills rise to about 580 metres on the banks of the Shetrunji river and are known the world over for the Palitana temples, a cluster of more than 860 Jain temples reached by a climb of around 3,750 stone steps. The Shetrunji rises in the Gir hills near Dhari and flows past the hills of Palitana on its way to the Gulf of Khambhat; the Palitana dam, built across it in 1959, forms a wide reservoir ringed by hills. Hastagiri, a hilltop Jain tirth overlooking the river about 25 km from Palitana, is the main trek of this camp. The rugged terrain, open hill slopes and the river make the area a rewarding setting for nature education and trekking.
